Tesla exaggerated EV range so much that drivers thought cars were broken

Doesn't the EPA say how they have to calculate range?

Seems like the EPA should be going after them if they didn't follow the rules -- or if they did follow the rules that it's not Tesla's fault the EPA testing allows numbers that don't match real life.

Either way, sounds like something for the EPA to deal with.

In mid-2022, Tesla started routing range complaints to a "Diversion Team" that fielded up to 2,000 cases a week and "was expected to close about 750 cases a week," Reuters reported.

I hope those expectations are for the team as a whole. Otherwise, that's like 3.2 minutes per case. It makes being a public defender look attractive.

a) this totally tracks with Tesla's semi-bullshit approach of using EPA 5-cycle test protocols to estimate range, when it's known those are 12-15% optimistic

b) is there anything he has created that Elon isn't going to enshittify with his compulsive lying about everything? All signs point to no!

c) The Tesla bros are going to have so much cognitive dissonance their fuckin heads gonna explode

Diversion Team members reportedly "often closed hundreds of cases a week and staffers were tracked on their average number of diverted appointments per day." Managers reportedly told employees that each canceled appointment saved the company $1,000, while easing pressure on service centers with long waits for service appointments.
Really encouraging to see that one of the few customer-facing arms of the company was a department whose sole purpose was to find any way not to help you.

Kinda surprised to see this here. Bashing tesla is a big downvote trigger around here.
Guess its countered by the fact that most people have realized how much of a douch musk is (I'm in that category too).

First of all, if you're looking for Tesla fans, Ars ain't it. Second of all, it's valid tech news, and it should be reported regardless of how happy or unhappy people are to hear it. Third, while it's alleged (probably reliably) that the orders came from Musk, the story is really about Telsa.

It’s almost as if the company is exactly as bad as we’ve been saying all along.
You mean the company that's been lying about FSD, "funding secured." solar-powered superchargers, battery swapping, robotaxis, appreciating assets, P100D loaners, and every on-sale date ever promised is lying about this too? Holy fuck

The Reuters article said that the EPA required Tesla to reduce their claimed range on the window stickers. I don't know if they had any comment on the in-dash readout.
